Jaguar XJ and XF gets new toys for MY2013

Jaguar has added two more engines to power the XJ and XF cars. The engines come in the form of a 3.0 litre V6 supercharged and 2.0 litre l4 turbocharged units.

The 3.0 litre V6 supercharged delivers 340 PS at 6,500 rpm with a torque of 450 Nm between 3,500 and 5,000 rpm. It features dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT), spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) and a Roots-type supercharger mounted on the ‘V’ of the engine. The engine is capable of accelerating the XF and XJ to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.7 seconds; the top speed is limited to 155 mph (249 km/h). Fuel economy is rated at 9.4 l/100km.

The 2.0 litre l4 turbocharged engine generates 240 PS at 5,500 rpm and 340 Nm of torque between 2,000 rpm and 4,000 rpm. The engine is compact and light, weighing only 138 kg. In the XF, the engine is capable of accelerating the car to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h), returning a fuel economy of 8.9 l/100km. As for the XJ, the engine propels the car to 60 mph in just 7.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 150 mph, and consumes 9.3 litres of fuel every 100 km.

The other existing engines in the line up are the 2.2 litre l4 turbodiesel, 3.0 litre V6 turbodiesel and 5.0 litre naturally aspirated V8 and 5.0 litre V8 supercharged – all of which have been tweaked.

The 2.2-litre turbodiesel is now offered in 163 PS/400 Nm and 200 PS/450 Nm versions for the XF, which has a fuel consumption of 5.1 l/100km. The 3.0 litre V6 turbodiesel in 240 PS/500 Nm and 275 PS/600 Nm versions now achieves an economy of 6.0 l/100km in the XF saloon while the XF Sportbrake writes in 6.2 l/100km.

As for the 5.0 litre V8s, Jaguar has tuned the engines for better efficiency and fuel economy without giving up horsepower and torque. In the XJ, the N/A engine gains 8% fuel economy while lowers emissions by 6% and the supercharged increases fuel economy to 6% and reduces emissions by 7%. In the XFR, which uses the 510 PS engine, fuel consumption is improved by 11% and emissions are cut by 8%.

Jaguar has also seen fit to engineer all engines – petrol and diesel – with the eight speed automatic transmission. However, only the V6 and the V8 petrol and all diesel engines is equipped with Jaguar’s Intelligent Stop/Start system. Only the XJ receives suspension enhancements that places more focus on passenger comfort.

Also tweaked is the infotainment system’s audio and navigation; both are now user-friendlier. Available as option is the Meridian audio system. Two power output permutations, a 380 W and a 825 W that come complete with multiple channel amps and Digital Signal Processing software and appropriate number of speakers.

The Meridian Trifield technology, which is only available with the top-range 825 W system, delivers perfect surround sound to every occupant in the vehicle. The press material states that Meridian employs Psychoacoustics research and experience to produce sounds true to life; it is benchmarked against real voices and instruments instead of another competitor.
